A guide on how to participate in research opportunities by approaching faculty.

1️⃣ Express interest in joining a research project

Take the initiative and ASK! Many on-campus research opportunities are not publicly advertised.

The best tools for expressing interest: email, office hours, appointments.

If you are feeling nervous, just remember that faculty are people. Faculty are excited about their research and want to talk about it.

If the faculty member is not taking on new researchers, they will likely suggest other people to contact or new places to look for opportunities.

2️⃣ Respond to the response

After you have asked to join a research project, there are 3 types of responses you might get.

💬 “You can join and get paid.”

💬 “You can join without getting paid.”

💬 “Sorry, there isn’t room to join.”
